With fuel prices at a a higher than usual price in america - overseas in great britain the cost of fuel has got the country fuming. A website, http://www.pipelinecard.org claims to have 100,000 members already and aims to issue a card that will get card holders money of at the pumps, saving them 5p -10p a litre.

Gotta be honest looks legit with it being hosted at a hosteurope account looks like someone fired this idea up as a personally hobby. if it goes wrong he can always sell the email list to some car dealership. win win situation. These days eh, promise the world and anyone will subscribe to you scripture.

The person behind it, Ben Scammel, does have a track record regarding fuel protests, so there is a lot of goodwill towards what he is trying to do.

The worry is that there is not that much margin for reduction in prices, even with 100,000+ members and that the petrol industry might bow to pressure from other large retailers to not allow pipeline to succeed.

Even if it is a success, I feel the real effort ought to be aimed at the government - the treasury in particular. The taxation on oil and petrol is too crude (apologies for the pun). When oil prices rise the tax take rises, when prices fall the tax take falls. Behind this the government has a budget of what it expects to earn from such tax revenue for the coming years.

The budget figure ought to be fixed and a sliding scale of tax applied depending on oil prices. That way we poor citizens would know what the price of car transport was likely to be and would be able to budget properly ourselves.
